The Perverting of Illusion or the Birth of the Khristian Reich

There can be no doubt that the fighting and dying in Iraq is as real as it gets. However, it is an illusion to believe that the war is in Iraq. This is a comfortable illusion, creating a much needed ideological/geographical separation. Without this very human ability to create such illusions, war would be impossible. Imagine if we were incapable of making real those necessary distinctions we invent about our enemies. Hear the justifiable complaints we voice against Al Qaeda ...and then... pay attention to our own voices from within our own country, our own breast. Listen carefully for the hate-filled voices of those who would destroy America and all it stands for. Where are the origins of these radical, judgmental, unyielding, religiously rigid voices? Can they only be traced back to the Middle East? Certainly there are voices, thousands of years old, crying from across the oceans for our destruction. Yet, listen even more carefully. There is the cooing of the political Christian Right. These moral absolutists, these intolerant fear-based conservatives are nurturing the embryonic voice of the Kristian Reich and adding itself to the chorus of those needing an end to America as a nation of the free and the brave.

As an artist relies on the power of illusion to create an image capable of revealing truth, so must we all use illusions in our daily lives. Used well, illusions bring much needed insights into ourselves and our place among others. Misused, illusions become the seeds of war. The type of war that exists in every heart of every human every day. It is our choice--alone, our responsibility--alone, as to how we--alone respond to this internal war. We, as a nation, seem to be at war with anything and everything that dares to threaten our paradigms, no matter how slight the threat may be. We seem to be incapable of honoring opportunities of change and growth. Individually, are we so vanquished by the sense of utter lack of control in our personal lives, that we can so easily join up with some to exert inappropriate control over others?  Is this the life we want? America, land of the hateful? Each time we perceive ourselves as absolutely right, others must be absolutely wrong. Each time we perceive ourselves as absolutely good, others must be absolutely bad. Each time we perceive ourselves as absolutely entitled to live, others must be absolutely put to death. As the terrorists' claims of defending the true Muslim faith are made false by their distortions, so are the Kristian Reich's claims of their defense of Christianity.

This is a time to be very careful. This is a time to be deliberate in our lives. We must all take pains to discern reality from illusion.  While some threaten us, we must not allow ourselves to respond in kind. Trading intolerance for intolerance, ignorance for ignorance, hate for hate is a warfare infinitely difficult to put an end to. Peace is the answer. Becoming free enough to become brave enough not to be threatened by peace can always be, at all times, our desire.
